Frequently asked questions about Ultra Fine Shot

FAQ for your reference. Please contact us if you need more information.

Q1What are the benefits of shot peening?

A1

Shot peening improves fatigue strength, wear resistance, corrosion crack resistance, heat radiation, and lubricity, lowers fluid resistance, and has forming and sealing. Processing conditions need to be optimized according to desired benefits.

Q2What are the processing conditions of shot peening?

A2

Projecting methods (wheel blasting, air blasting, etc.), projecting time, coverage, throwing speed, abrasive flow rate, density, projection angle, processing temperature, etc. as to projection conditions. Material, specific gravity, hardness, size distribution as to abrasives. Material, hardness, resilience, size, shape, etc. as to work piece.

Q3What is coverage?

A3

Coverage is defined as the percentage of the total surface area covered by abrasive impacts; one of the barometers to show shot peening quality.

Q4What is fatigue strength?

A4

Metal gets worn out with repeated stress. Accumulated fatigue leads to sudden breaking by even small stress. For safety and reliability of the products, fatigue strength needs to be improved. Molds with enough fatigue strength would reduce maintenance cost as well.

remarks
The harder workpiece material is, the more fatigue strength increases; however, too hard material makes processing difficult. Then, it would better to strengthen the material surface with compressive stress after processing "not-so-hard" material. Reinforcing the surface prevents micro cracks and compressive stress prevents the cracks from extending. The major methods include case hardening, induction hardening, and shot peening, and shot peening as cold working that uses no heat is cost-effective.

Q5How does SCC occur?

A5

3 factors;
1) Material (SCC is caused easily or not)
2) Stress (Tensile stress is caused repeatedly or not)
3) Environment (humid, hot, high-pressured)
Tensile stress is generated by metal processing such as welding, bending, etc. Compressive stress given by shot peening compensates and releases tensile stress to prevent SCC.

Q6I'm interested in comparing effects gained through different processing conditions. Would you carry out trials?

A6

Yes, our Test Center will take on the trials. Please let us know details on your workpiece such as material, shape, size, current challenges, etc.
